Atletico Madrid boss Simeone given one-match touchline ban uefa Chaotic scenes erupted following his team’s 3–2 defeat at Anfield in September.
Simeone admitted he regretted the incident and speaking ahead of his team’s Champions League test against Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, Arteta said: “If you react in a way that is not good, we have a responsibility to be an example.
“I’ve done it. I’ve made mistakes. But I try to learn and try not to make them again.”
“It’s difficult (not to react) because you are defending your club, your players and small things can decide in the end whether you win the match or not.
“We are living it with high emotions and it is difficult to control. We get really emotional and we start running and celebrating goals with our players. This is something natural and should be understood in a respectful way.
“From my experience over the years, I try to stay a little calm but there are moments when it is not easy.”
Arteta will face Simeone for the first time in their group clash as the Arsenal manager aims to make it two wins for his side so far in Europe.
Arteta’s managerial style has been compared to Simeone, who is now in his 15th season in charge of the LaLiga outfit.
“Obviously he is someone I respect and I have learned from him in many situations,” Arteta said.
“I rate him at the highest level. What he has done since coming to Atlético is excellent. Not only what he has achieved but the way he has done it – the identity he has created in the club, the team, the spirit, it is very simple and obvious to recognize them and that is because the manager has a lot of them.
“To achieve this in a short period of time and to achieve it for 14 years is extremely difficult, it is something that is incredible so it will be a pleasure to meet him.
“They have won big trophies, made Champions League finals and made all the right steps when needed. We need to try to do that and we are on a journey to try to achieve that.”
Asked if he could imagine managing Simeone in the Premier League, Arteta added: “If he works in the Champions League, which is the highest competition in Europe, he can do it anywhere.
“You have to come here and try it and get a feel for it, but I’m pretty sure his knowledge is incredible and his character and desire will take him anywhere.”
