Bengaluru, October 20 (IANS) A woman committed suicide on Monday. The incident occurred at Visvesvaraya Pickup Dam in Doddaballapur taluk near Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru, an official said.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Pushpavati, resident of Tapasihalli. Before taking this extreme step he had recorded a video message.
According to the police, the woman, who worked as a lecturer, was married to a man named Venu 11 months ago and was allegedly harassed by him and his family for dowry and land. Earlier, her family had filed a missing complaint at Doddaballapur Mahila Police Station.
Pushpavati alleged in her video that her husband has been harassing her since the day of their marriage and deliberately maintains distance from her. Whenever he tried to talk to her she refused to respond. When she raised the matter with her in-laws, they asked her to wait and assured her that things would get better.
She further said that whenever she discussed family life and the child, her husband would scold her and ask, “What’s the hurry?” When he suspected she might have a medical problem and questioned her, he abused her, using abusive language.
She also alleged that whenever he tried to touch her, he kicked her in the chest. Police said her in-laws advised her to have a child with their younger son, while her brother-in-law also made inappropriate comments, causing severe mental trauma.
Pushpavati also alleged that despite her parents objecting to the harassment, it continued. She claimed that during fights her husband’s family attacked and abused her. On one such occasion, she got injured, was taken to hospital for treatment, and her father-in-law threatened that if she filed a police complaint, she would not be allowed to return.
The harassment continued, and during another quarrel, when she warned her husband’s family that she would file a police complaint, they allegedly grabbed her by the neck and threw her out of the house. When his brother intervened, he was also beaten up. Police said a complaint was then lodged at Doddaballapur police station.
An official said that detailed information regarding the incident is awaited.
