Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, October 20, credited the country’s armed forces for their bravery and sacrifice and said India is on the verge of ending Naxalite-Maoist terrorism. Speaking on board INS Vikrant off the Goa coast, PM Modi also lauded the extraordinary coordination among the armed forces during “Operation Sindoor”, which, he said, “brought Pakistan to its knees”.

Maoist insurgency is about to end in India

According to PTI, PM Modi said India has achieved a “major milestone” in its fight against Maoist terror, with more than 100 districts now free from the decades-old insurgency. He praised the courage of the security forces in reducing the Maoist influence from 125 districts a decade ago to only 11 districts today.

Modi said, “It is because of the bravery and courage of our security forces that the country is on the verge of freedom from Naxalite-Maoist terrorism.” He said only three out of 11 districts are under the influence of Maoists, resulting in more than 90% success in curbing the insurgency.

Modi said many districts which were once suffering from Maoist violence are now witnessing Diwali celebrations for the first time. He said, “Record sales and purchases are being witnessed in these areas during the GST Bachat Utsav. In districts where Maoist terror had never even mentioned the Constitution, the mantra of Swadeshi now resonates.”

He said that in the same areas where Maoists once destroyed schools and hospitals, there are now roads, businesses and new educational and medical facilities. Saluting their service and resilience, he said, “These successes have been achieved because of the tenacity, sacrifice and courage of our police and security forces.”

Exceptional coordination among armed forces during ‘Operation Sindoor’

In his address, Modi also highlighted India’s growing self-reliance in defense production and praised the armed forces for their seamless coordination during Operation Sindoor, PTI reported.

He said, “The fear created by the Navy, the extraordinary skill of the Air Force and the bravery of the Army along with their extraordinary coordination quickly brought Pakistan to its knees during Operation Sindoor.”

He described INS Vikrant as a “powerful symbol of self-reliant India” and a testament to India’s industrial and technological strength. Built at the Cochin Shipyard, Vikrant is India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier and the largest warship ever built in the country.

Defense self-reliance and global recognition

According to PTI, Modi underlined that India’s defense sector has made massive progress in the last decade. “In the last 11 years, India’s defense production has more than tripled, crossing ₹1.5 lakh crore last year,” he said.

He pointed out that since 2014, Indian shipyards have delivered more than 40 indigenous warships and submarines to the Navy – almost a new ship every 40 days. “Missiles like BrahMos and Akash have proved their capabilities during Operation Sindoor and many countries are now interested in purchasing them,” he said.

Modi stressed that thousands of defense items have been identified for domestic production, significantly reducing the dependence on imports. He said India’s defense exports have grown more than 30 times in the last decade, making the country a serious player in the global arms market.

Celebrating Diwali with forces

The Prime Minister, who has been celebrating Diwali with the armed forces since 2014, spent the night on board INS Vikrant. According to PTI report, Modi saw takeoff and the landing of MiG 29K fighter planes, participated in a cultural program consisting of patriotic songs and joined a yoga session on deck the next morning.

They also witnessed spectacular steampasts of warships including INS Vikrant, Vikramaditya, Surat, Chennai, Imphal and Mormugao as well as flypasts of naval aircraft such as Seaking, Kamov 31 and P8I.

“It is difficult to describe in words the last night we spent on INS Vikrant,” Modi said. “My Diwali was special because it was spent with you.”

‘A new era of confidence and courage’

Summarizing his address, the Prime Minister said India was witnessing “a new era of confidence and courage” – from eradicating internal threats to strengthening its external security.

“As India frees itself from Maoist terror and becomes self-reliant in defence, we are entering a future of glory, honor and respect,” Modi was quoted as saying by PTI.
