Hyderabad, Oct 20 (IANS) An accused in the murder of a police constable in Telangana’s Nizamabad city was shot by the police on Monday when he allegedly tried to escape from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
Sheikh Riaz, who was undergoing treatment at the Government General Hospital in Nizamabad, allegedly snatched weapons from the policemen on duty and tried to escape.
Director General of Police B Shivdhar Reddy said that according to the information received from the local police, Riyaz tried to escape by attacking the police again. He had snatched the weapon from the police and tried to shoot at the police, they said in a statement, adding that he died as police tried to stop him.
The DGP said Riyaz on Sunday attacked a civilian named Asif, who was helping the police in arresting him, and seriously injured him. Asif is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Hyderabad.
Nizamabad Police Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya and senior officials visited the hospital.
Habitual criminal Riyaz, who was on the run after stabbing a police constable to death two days ago, was arrested on Sunday.
With the help of Asif, a police team caught him near Sarangapur under the limits of Nizamabad Town 6 police station.
Nizamabad Police Commissioner had said that the accused has been captured alive. He denied that any encounter had taken place.
The officer clarified that there is no truth in the news circulated on social media that the police opened fire on Riyaz.
A police team had reached Sarangapur following a tip-off that Riyaz was hiding in a shed there. Seeing the police he tried to run away. However, Asif, who was present nearby, tried to catch him.
Riyaz tried to attack Asif with a knife. The police team was successful in surrounding and capturing Riyaz. Both Riyaz and Asif sustained injuries in the scuffle and were taken to hospital for treatment.
On the night of October 17, Riyaz had allegedly stabbed a constable to death after he was caught in a bike theft case in Nizamabad.
Constable E. Pramod, 42, went with his nephew to arrest Riyaz. Pramod was riding the bike while his nephew was sitting behind and the accused was made to sit between them.
The 24 year old accused suddenly attacked Pramod with a knife. When his nephew tried to stop him, the accused stabbed him too. Two of Riyaz’s associates came on a bike and took him away. Although a sub-inspector tried to stop them, they attacked him too.
Injured Pramod was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His nephew was undergoing treatment.
Taking the incident seriously, the DGP had ordered a search for the accused.
After this the police started a large-scale search for Riyaz. Nine teams were formed to catch him.
