Visakhapatnam, October 20 (IANS) One person was killed and five others were injured when a firecracker parcel exploded in Andhra Pradesh’s Parvathipuram town on Sunday.
Six porters were injured in the afternoon blast at the ANL Courier Parcel Point located on the APSRTC premises. Police reached the spot and took the injured to the hospital.
While three porters suffered serious injuries, three others suffered minor injuries. All of them were shifted to the Regional Regional Hospital, and the seriously injured were later airlifted to Visakhapatnam.
Ramesh, one of the seriously injured, died in a private hospital on Sunday night.
Parvatipuram in-charge minister K. Atchennaidu and Home Minister V. Anitha expressed grief over the incident. He directed the district officials to ensure best treatment to the injured.
The ministers spoke to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police and took information about the incident.
Orders have been given to investigate the incident. Preliminary investigation reveals that some traders allegedly purchased firecrackers and booked the parcel in Vizianagaram. It was for delivery in Parvatipuram. An explosion occurred on the spot while handling the parcel, injuring six porters and one of them later died.
Shocking TV footage of the blast scene shows Coolie lying on the ground with severe burns. A fire engine also reached the spot.
The blast spread panic in the busy area of Parvathipuram, which is the headquarters of Parvathipuram Manyam district.
The incident came as a shock as firecrackers are not allowed in Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses due to the risk of explosion. There was clear negligence by the concerned staff in accepting the parcel at Vizianagaram.
Parvatipuram MLA Bonella Vijay Chandra visited the spot and spoke to the injured. The MLA asked police personnel to investigate the incident.
He pulled up ANL parcel officials for accepting firecrackers as parcels despite the ban on transportation of firecrackers in APSRTC buses.
