New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) Emphasizing national pride in local craftsmanship and innovation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Indians to celebrate the festive season by adopting ‘swadeshi’ products.

In a post on Twitter, PM Modi urged the country’s 140 crore citizens to celebrate Diwali by buying Indian-made goods and proudly declared, “Proudly say this is Swadeshi!” (Say with pride it is Swadeshi!)

She encouraged sharing of purchases on social media to inspire others, fueling a wave of support for home-based artisans and makers.

The Prime Minister’s message cited a live video by MyGovIndia featuring singer Shankar Mahadevan along with Bollywood stars like Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Trupti Dimri, Anupam Kher, Sunil Grover and Rupali Ganguly.

The two-minute video clip, set in bustling markets decorated with lights, shows families shopping for sweets, sarees, shoes and electronics – all labeled ‘Made in India’.

It highlights local locations like the Men’s Collection in Old Delhi, Mandore Bazaar in Jodhpur, the Lighthouse on Rajpur Road in Dehradun and the Pure Education Collection in Tollygunge, Kolkata.

The viral video promotes the purchase of indigenous vehicles, home appliances like TVs, ACs, fridges, washing machines, smartphones and laptops made by Indian youth.

It ends with a ‘Vocal for Local’ mantra, urging people to share selfies with products or artisans on the NaMo app, with PM Modi promising to re-post selected entries.

The initiative is in line with PM Modi’s long-running ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign, which was launched in 2020 amid the pandemic to boost domestic production and reduce imports.

Experts say this could stimulate the economy, especially during Diwali when consumer spending increases by 20-30 per cent as per industry estimates.

The push comes as India aims to cut dependence on imports.

Social media was abuzz with reactions, ranging from support to criticism of the imported luxury items.

As the festivals approach, PM Modi’s call is resonating, potentially leading to a ‘swadeshi’ shopping spree.
