Imphal, Oct 19 (IANS) Days ahead of NSCN-IM general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah’s much-awaited Manipur visit, a Naga organization on Sunday urged him to apologize to the Naga community for his past mistakes during his homecoming on October 22.
Preparations were underway for the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) supremo Muivah to visit his birthplace in Manipur’s Ukhrul district for the first time in 50 years.
The NSCN-IM leader is expected to visit his native village Somdal in Tangkhul Naga dominated Ukhrul district on October 22. Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) in a statement said Muivah will visit his native village Somdal in Ukhrul district “empty handed” 55 years after he set out on a mission to seek freedom for the Nagas.
“There is no reason to glorify a man who ‘failed’ the Nagas on all fronts,” Louis Gangmei, ZUF’s secretary, information and publicity, said in a statement. The statement said: “Muivah has been personally responsible for the targeting of many people. He ordered the brutal killings of many prominent leaders in the name of Naga nationalism and sovereignty. He ordered the arson of villages in the name of taxation or fighting the Indian Army and all common Nagas sacrificed their lives.”
ZUF said the common people in the Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur were suffering while Muivah and his close associates were “moving from one international destination to another”. The organisation, which has an armed wing, said the NSCN (IM) leader should “unconditionally apologize to the Nagas for all the mistakes committed over the years”.
It pointed out that other Naga leaders, including church members, had earlier also apologized to Muivah. The ZUF had earlier accused the NSCN (IM) of a “pattern of deliberate targeted oppression” against the Zeliangrong people comprising the Zeme, Liangmai and Rongmei Nagas. It warned that failure to stop these confrontations could lead to clashes within the Naga society.
The Naga body said reports indicate that the NSCN-IM has already set up camps in Zeliangrong areas to control the area, increase extortion and levy illegal taxes on the National Highway and Trans-Asian Railway.
The ZUF statement said Muivah’s proposed visit is a misguided attempt to rekindle the lost spirit of Naga nationalism; Using false propaganda to mislead people, he only wants to pursue his selfish political ambitions in the name of Naga sovereignty. This is nothing but a desperate attempt. It said the 2015 Framework Agreement was deliberately misrepresented to the Naga people and failed to provide real solutions.
“Therefore, I appeal to the Naga people, especially the Zeliangrong community, to remain vigilant against such hollow political propaganda,” the statement said.
Of the total 16 districts of Manpur, the Porphopal inhabited districts are Sno, Chandel, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Noni and Senpati, all of which are on the Nagaland and Myanmar border.
