New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) In a swift and coordinated operation, the Assam Rifles operating under the Army’s Spear Corps successfully rescued two kidnapped laborers from the clutches of cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) faction in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district, defense officials said on Sunday.
According to officials, the incident occurred when armed cadres of NSCN-K abducted two laborers from a construction site at Laho village in Dadam circle of Tirap district on Saturday.
Defense Ministry officials said, “Acting on specific intelligence, Assam Rifles troops were rapidly deployed and a well-coordinated search and rescue operation was launched in the general area of Niannu to locate the abductees and arrest the culprits.”
According to officials, during the search operation the militants opened indiscriminate fire on the security forces. Responding in a controlled manner and ensuring the safety of civilians, the security forces displayed professionalism and restraint and successfully rescued the civilians.
An officer said, “During the operation, when the search operation began, the insurgents fired indiscriminately at the advancing security forces. Displaying utmost professionalism and restraint, the troops responded in a controlled manner to prevent any additional damage and ensure the safety of the abducted civilians.”
As a result of measured and timely response of Assam Rifles troops, both the laborers were successfully rescued without any loss and further subversive actions by the group in the area were prevented.
The rescued persons are being brought to Khonsa for medical observation and assistance.
According to officials, the search and cleanup operation is ongoing.
Notably, the Central government had last month extended by five years the ban imposed on NSCN-K and all its factions, wings and key organizations for their involvement in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India.
According to the notification issued by the Home Ministry, the NSCN-K has declared its aim to create a sovereign Nagaland comprising the Naga inhabited areas of the India-Myanmar region by seceding from the Indian Union and has aligned itself with other outlawed organizations like ULFA-I and others.
