The department has predicted heavy rain in the Ghats areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni and Tenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu and also in Kerala for the next 24 hours.
For Chennai and its neighboring districts, the weather department has predicted one or two rounds of light-moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some areas.
Tamil Nadu has been receiving heavy rains for the last two-three days after the onset of North East Monsoon on October 16.
Meanwhile, on the amount of rainfall recorded in Tamil Nadu, the weather office said Kothagri district in Nilgiris received a maximum of 14 cm rainfall, while Sirkali in Aluthurai district recorded a minimum of 1 cm in the last 24 hours.
The weather department said in its bulletin on Sunday that the upper air cyclonic circulation is over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal and extends up to 1.5 km above sea level.
“Under its influence, a low pressure system is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, 2025,” the bulletin said. It is likely to move north-westwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.
Squally wind speed reaching 35 kmph to 45 kmph and gusting to 55 kmph is likely over South Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The bulletin said that fishermen who are in the deep sea of South Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal are advised to return to the coast by the morning of October 21.
