Kolkata, Oct 19 (IANS) Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari strongly condemned the alleged attack on Darjeeling MP Raju Bista in North Bengal and accused the Trinamool Congress of “heinous” acts by its goons.
On Saturday evening, the convoy of BJP MP Raju Bista, who was returning from Rimbik after doing relief work, was attacked by miscreants in Sukhiya Pokhri area of Darjeeling district. A complaint was lodged the same night. Police said on Sunday that an FIR has been registered on the basis of the complaint.
Darjeeling Superintendent of Police Praveen Prakash said, “The MP has complained about the attack on his convoy. We have started an investigation.”
Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of instigating the attack on the MP’s convoy.
In a post on X, Adhikari said, “I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on my colleague and Darjeeling MP Shri Raju Bista ji at Masdhura near Sukhiya Pokhri. This attack comes after the deadly and fatal attack on MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh.”
The BJP MLA from Nandigram alleged that the attack was carried out by ‘TMC goons’ with the intention of causing serious harm.
The official highlighted Bista’s ongoing relief operations following the recent floods in North Bengal.
The official said, “This heinous act of TMC goons targeting his convoy with the intention of seriously hurting him smacks of desperation and fear. Mr. Raju Bista’s tireless relief work and dedication to the people after the devastating floods has clearly irked the TMC, which is resorting to such despicable tactics to silence him. But let me make it clear that these “Cowardly attacks will only strengthen our resolve.”
Reiterating BJP’s commitment to stand by its leaders and supporters, Adhikari said such attacks will not shake the party’s resolve. The BJP leader said, “But let me make it clear that these cowardly attacks will only strengthen our resolve. Not only the people of Darjeeling but the entire state of West Bengal stand with him and he will continue this good work with double vigour.”
After the attack on his convoy, BJP MP Raju Bista himself shared the information about the attack.
“Today at Masdhura near Sukhiya Pokhri, my convoy was attacked by unidentified miscreants. Though those cowards attacked me, the force of the attack hit the vehicle immediately behind me. The timing of the attack after the announcement of talks for our region is highly suspicious and points towards a conspiracy to disturb peace in our region,” Bista said in a social media post on Saturday.
He was referring to the Centre’s decision to appoint a government interlocutor on Gorkha issues in Darjeeling, Dooars and Terai region in north Bengal.
The BJP MP said, “If people loyal to Kolkata think that we will be bothered by such attacks, they are wrong. We are not afraid and such cowardly attacks boost our morale. I am warning those who have tried to disturb the peace today, we will not let your efforts succeed. We will work towards lasting peace in our region and no power in the world can stop this from happening.”
The incident comes weeks after BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked by miscreants in Nagarakata area of Jalpaiguri district. A total of six people have been arrested in connection with the attack on Khagen Murmu.
