Funeral of former Prime Minister of Kenya Raila Odinga The service is being held at his rural home amid heavy security, following deadly violence in the capital.

Odinga, a supporter of democracy, will be given traditional rites as well as full military honors as he is buried next to his father Jaramogi, who fought for Kenya’s independence and was the country’s first vice president.

Although he was never successful in his five campaigns to become president, Odinga made political agreements with three presidents as tensions rose after the elections.

President William Ruto on Friday said Odinga had helped him “stabilize the country” following a political accord signed in March this year, following months of anti-government protests in which young Kenyans stormed and burned parts of parliament buildings.

Odinga ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the African Union but previously mediated political impasses on the continent.

Former AU vice-president Erastus Mwencha said Odinga’s influence is continental.

He said, “I look upon him as one of those who fought for the Second Emancipation.” He said that some African countries are still struggling for democracy.

While serving as Prime Minister in 2010, Odinga played a key role in the constitutional review.

Since his death, dozens of world leaders have praised his statesmanship.

Odinga’s survivors include his wife Ida and children Rosemary, Raila Jr. and Winnie.
