Chennai, Oct 19 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai, has issued a weather alert predicting widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu over the next four days following the formation of a low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea.
According to the RMC, a low pressure system is currently situated over the South Andaman Sea and its adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify into a well-marked low pressure area by October 21 and move west-northwestwards, gradually strengthening as it approaches the Tamil Nadu coast.
As a result, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely over many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Sunday.
Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places, especially in the hilly areas of Coimbatore district and Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts.
For Monday (October 20), the forecast indicates heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Kallakurichi and parts of Coimbatore and Erode districts.
Madurai, Dindigul and Virudhunagar as well as Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal are also likely to receive moderate rain.
Heavy rain is expected in some areas of Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Puducherry-Karaikal on October 21.
As the system strengthens, rainfall intensity is likely to increase over the coastal and adjoining interior districts. Red alert has been issued for North Coastal Tamil Nadu for October 22.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over districts including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram and Ranipet. Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur and Vellore may also receive heavy rain.
Chennai will have generally cloudy sky with possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some areas.
The maximum temperature is likely to be around 28-29 degrees Celsius and the minimum is likely to be around 25-26 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea as the situation is likely to worsen in the coming days.
