Kolkata, October 18 (IANS) The convoy of BJP’s Darjeeling MP Raju Bista was attacked by miscreants in Sukhiya Pokhri area of North Bengal on Saturday evening.
The BJP MP shared information regarding the attack on his social media handle.
Bista said, “Today at Masdhura near Sukhiya Pokhri, my convoy was attacked by unidentified miscreants. Although those cowards attacked me, the force of the attack hit the vehicle immediately behind me. The timing of the attack after the announcement of talks for our region is highly suspicious and points to a conspiracy to disturb peace in our region.”
He was referring to the Centre’s decision to appoint a government interlocutor on Gorkha issues in Darjeeling, Dooars and Terai region in north Bengal.
The BJP MP said, “If people loyal to Kolkata think that we will be bothered by such attacks, they are wrong. We are not afraid and such cowardly attacks boost our morale. I am warning those who have tried to disturb the peace today, we will not let your efforts succeed. We will work towards lasting peace in our region and no power in the world can stop this from happening.”
The incident comes weeks after BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked by miscreants in Nagarakata area of Jalpaiguri district.
Following the development, Union Minister of State for Education and Donor, Sukanta Majumdar condemned the attack on Bista’s convoy.
“After the recent attacks on Hon’ble MP from Maldah North Shri Khagen Murmu and Hon’ble MLA from Siliguri Shri Shankar Ghosh, another despicable and cowardly conspiracy came to light today. This time through hired scoundrels our Hon’ble MP from Darjeeling Shri @RajuBistaBJP ji was targeted. In the sudden attack, the vehicle behind his car was damaged, but by his grace Majumdar managed to escape a Said in the social media post, Almighty, Raju ji is safe.
“I strongly condemn this vile attack. To those perpetrating this dirty conspiracy, my message is absolutely clear: The people of North Bengal are keeping a vigilant eye on every moment of your anarchy. The people of North Bengal, and indeed the entire Bengal, will ensure a befitting reply to such outrageous conduct. @BJP4Bengal is not afraid of attacks carried out through hired goons, neither are any representative of the BJP nor anyone else. Activists can be intimidated or silenced at any time,” the Union Minister said.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed strong objection to the appointment of a government interlocutor by the Center on Gorkha issues in Darjeeling, Dooars and Terai, terming the move as “unilateral” and taken without consultation with the state government.
The Chief Minister said the decisions weaken state authority and could affect the delicate socio-political balance in the hills.
