The US Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday warned Americans to stay away from US government facilities in the twin-island nation.

It was an unusual warning that came amid rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela on deadly US attacks Caribbean Suspected drug traffickers are being targeted.

Venezuela lies just a few miles from Trinidad, where people in a community are mourning the disappearance of two local fishermen who were killed in a US strike on Tuesday.

Trinidad and Tobago Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander told The Associated Press that the warning is based on threats made against American citizens in the Caribbean nation, which U.S. officials say could be linked to ongoing tensions in the region.

Alexander said Trinidad and Tobago authorities have responded to the threats by implementing security measures to deal with any situations that may arise.

However, local officials declined to share specific details about the reported threats.

At least 28 people have been killed in six attacks since the beginning of September, Alexander said, adding that US officials in a briefing with officials in Trinidad and Tobago noted the tense situation in the region.

Following the most recent attack, the US government took survivors into custody after the military attacked a suspected drug-carrying ship in the Caribbean, officials said Friday.
