What started as a night of celebration University of Cincinnati There was chaos among the students on Friday evening when the balcony of the third floor suddenly collapsed, causing the crowd to fall onto the footpath below.
Ten people were injured, one of whom is in critical condition, officials said. WKRC,
Emergency crews responded to the off-campus home on Stetson Street, just steps from the university’s College of Medicine, shortly before 10 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found that the wooden balcony had become separated from the building and had collapsed.
Officials said the students had gathered to celebrate the end of the exams.
“They had a big exam today and they were celebrating,” cincinnati Police Department Capt. Stephen Bowe said.
Cincinnati fire officials told WKRC that 10 people were transported to area hospitals.
One victim was in critical condition and being treated for “life-threatening” injuries, while five others were reported to be in critical condition and four had minor injuries.
Authorities have not said how many people were on the balcony when it collapsed. The victims have not been identified, but officials said many were students.
Photos and video from the scene showed remains of the balcony protruding from the building as investigators worked late into the night.
A cincinnati enquirer The reporter at the scene said that several youths were sitting on the roadside with their heads in their hands. Nearby, an American Spirit cigarette carton and empty alcoholic seltzer cans were scattered on the ground. A leather purse, jacket and a small pair of brown heeled shoes were lying near a broken, bloodied plastic chair.
The apartment building, located about a half-mile from campus, is not affiliated with the university but has several resident students, officials said.
Hamilton County’s Building and Inspection Division has been notified University of CincinnatiWhich is helping the students displaced by the collapse.
Cincinnati Fire Chief Frank McKinley told WKRC that the cause of the building collapse is under investigation.
