Bengaluru, Oct 18 (IANS) The Karnataka BJP on Saturday attacked the Congress-led Karnataka government for allegedly targeting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its supporters in the state.
Accusing the Congress-led government of removing RSS banners, flags in Chittapura town of Kalaburagi district, opposition leader R. Ashoka questioned, “Is Chittapur in India, or is it the Kharge family’s own republic”?
Notably, AICC president Malikarjun Kharge is from Kalaburagi, and his son, RDPR, is the IT minister and BT Priyank Kharge, the district in-charge minister for Calcutta.
Ashok further said, “Permission for the RSS foot march has been taken from the municipality. Advertisement tax has been paid to the municipality for putting up the banners and flags, and a receipt has also been issued. Yet, you got the saffron banners and flags removed overnight, Minister Priyank Kharge. Do you think of yourself as the Nizam of Chittapur, or as a Razakar?”
Ashok warned, “Spewing venom against the RSS may please the fake Gandhians, but don’t dream that you can turn Chittapur into your republic. This ‘Emergency-style’ game will not last long.”
Reacting to the government’s move to suspend the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) for attending the Raichur RSS event, BJP Yuva Morcha national president and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has responded that he will represent the suspended officer in the court and challenge the government order in this regard.

He challenged, “There are several judgments of high courts which have upheld the right of government employees to participate in RSS events. I have no doubt that this illegal suspension will be revoked. If the Siddaramaiah government wants a legal battle, we will give it.”
It may be recalled that Karnataka Rural Development Department had suspended Raichur PDO Praveen Kumar KV for attending an RSS event in uniform, citing violation of civil services conduct rules.
State BJP president and MLA BY Vijayendra alleged, “Feudal-style politics is running rampant in Chittapur, with government officials being misused to suppress freedom of expression and speech. Minister Priyank Kharge, who is also the local MLA, has continued his hate politics by targeting the RSS and pro-Hindu organisations, which, as per the rules, did not organize the RSS procession celebrating its centenary. Had received permission to do so.”
He said, “Late last night in Chittapur, municipal corporation employees tore down saffron flags, banners and banners lawfully put up to mark the procession. This act makes a mockery of the essence of democracy. This deliberate attempt to disrupt the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is highly condemnable.”
Vijayendra said, “BJP will stand as the voice of the people to challenge the so-called Kalaburagi Republic controlled from Chittapur and maintain the dignity of democracy and the Constitution. Minister Priyank Kharge, drunk with power, should remember the undeniable truth of this land: “No one has ever tolerated anyone who provokes patriots.”
