Nandurbar (Maharashtra), October 18 (IANS) At least seven pilgrims returning from Astamba Yatra were killed and more than 10 were injured when a vehicle overturned near Chandsaili Ghat in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district on Saturday morning. The officers provided this information.
According to preliminary information, the accident occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while taking a sharp turn on the ghat stretch, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Police said that the collision was so severe that seven passengers died on the spot.
More than 10 other people were seriously injured in the accident and were taken to Taloda sub-district hospital for treatment. Doctors said the condition of many of the injured was critical and the death toll could rise.
Local residents and passersby reached the spot and helped the police in the rescue operation.
When they pulled out the bodies from the damaged vehicle, he described the scene as one of chaos and distress.
As soon as the information was received, police teams from nearby police stations reached the spot and started investigating the incident.
According to preliminary information, there were at least 40 passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was speeding and lost control at a sharp turn.
Police have started the process of identifying the bodies, which will be handed over to their families after postmortem.
After this tragic accident, there is a mournful silence in the entire area.
The devotees were returning home after completing the Astamba Yatra, a religious pilgrimage that sees a large number of participants from across the region every year.
Asthamba is a religious place in Nandurbar region and is located in Akrani tehsil. Astamba Fair is considered to be one of the most prominent fairs of the tribals of South Gujarat and North West Maharashtra. The fair is held for 10 to 15 days during the Diwali festival.
