Chennai, October 18 (IANS) Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran has attacked the ruling DMK government, accusing it of gross mismanagement and negligence in handling the paddy procurement process in Nagapattinam district.
In a strongly worded statement, Nagenthran alleged that thousands of farmers are struggling due to lack of planning by the government, as paddy procurement at direct procurement centers (DPCs) has been stalled for more than 10 days.
“More than 15,000 bags of paddy have reportedly been stored at various centers across the district, causing immense hardship to farmers. It is unacceptable for officials to cite storage issues to justify the delay,” he said.
The BJP leader said that it is the duty of the government to anticipate seasonal conditions and act accordingly.
He said, “The onset of monsoon and the Diwali festival was known in advance. A responsible government should have completed the procurement of paddy and ensured prompt payment to farmers before the rains. Instead, the DMK’s incompetence has resulted in the harvested paddy being left to rot in the open.”
Nagendran also hit out at Chief Minister MK Stalin for what he called a “publicity-driven” approach that ignored the genuine concerns of farmers.
“The DMK government works like an advertising model – all lip service, no substance. Though it spends crores on publicity, it has failed to meet the basic needs of the farming community,” he alleged.
Referring to CM Stalin constantly portraying himself as the “son of Delta”, the BJP leader said the Chief Minister should now prove that claim with action.
“If the title ‘Delta Beta’ means anything, he should immediately order war-footing procurement of paddy from farmers and protect their livelihoods,” Nainar Nageenthran said.
He urged the government to deploy adequate staff and transport facilities to clear the “backlog” in the DPC without any delay, warning that “continued apathy” could worsen the crisis among paddy farmers in the delta region.
