Chennai, Oct 18 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Center in Chennai has predicted heavy rain in nine districts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Tirupur, as the northeast monsoon gains momentum across the state.

According to officials, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain in many western and southern districts on Saturday. The affected districts include Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, Namakkal and Karur. The forecast warns of heavy rain at isolated places in these areas.

The weather office further said that there is also a possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Theni and Tenkasi districts on Sunday. Rain activity is expected to continue with thunder and lightning at some places in these areas.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Tirunelveli district in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on Friday. Nalumukku in Tirunelveli recorded 16 cm rainfall, the highest in the state. After this, there was 15 cm rainfall in Oothu and 14 cm rainfall in Kakachi. Manjolai recorded 11 cm rainfall, while Kalakkad in Tirunelveli recorded 9 cm rainfall and several other parts of the district recorded around 8 cm rainfall.

Officials said widespread rainfall has brought relief to parched areas in southern Tamil Nadu, although persistent rain in hilly areas has raised concerns of landslides and waterlogging. The Nilgiri district administration has been put on alert to monitor sensitive slopes and low-lying areas.

Chennai and its suburbs are expected to have partly cloudy sky with light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places.

The regional weather office said the chances of rain are expected to increase in the evening due to coastal winds coming from the east and increase in humidity levels.

The weather department has urged residents of the affected districts to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains. Fishermen have also been advised to exercise caution as there is a possibility of storm in the sea along the western and southern coastal areas.
