The boy’s father, Antonio Pierce, told Clayton County police on Sunday that two armed men took Nanakai while he was in his car seat and stole $6,500 in cash and 3 pounds of marijuana.

The kidnapping is alleged to have taken place at an apartment that Pierce said he was using as a stash house in Riverdale, about 11 miles south of Atlanta.

But late Tuesday night, police found Nnakai’s body in the backyard of a house, just on the other side of the fence from the apartment complex.

Clayton County Detective Cheyenne Reynolds told reporters Friday that authorities never believed Pierce’s story.

“He was caught in a number of lies throughout the entire interview process,” Reynolds said. He said witness statements and evidence from Pierce’s phone led police to the child’s body. Police also say Pierce asked another man to hide a bag containing guns and drugs.

Police have not said when or where Nankai died or why Pierce might have killed him.

Police arrested Pierce on Sunday on charges of marijuana possession and traffic offenses. Later he also added the charge of false statement. On Wednesday, they charged Pierce with murder of Nnakai, concealment of a death, tampering with evidence, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, cruelty to a child and false reporting of a crime. He added the family violence charge on Thursday.

Police also arrested Nnakai’s mother, Nicollette Pratt, charging her with cruelty to children, concealment of death, obstruction of an officer, making false statements and participation in a crime. Her arrest warrant states she told investigators Pierce had shaken the child first, local news outlets report. Investigators also found Pratt’s story inconsistent, the warrant says.

There is no attorney listed for Pierce or Pratt in court records.

The infant was a twin, and his surviving sister has been placed in the custody of child welfare officials.

More details may be revealed during a preliminary hearing for parents next month.
