A 14-year-old boy has been seriously injured in St. Petersburg, Floridaafter attempting to repeat Science experiment that has gone viral tiktokKnown as the “Jam Jar Pulse Jet”.

According to the local fire department, the boy experienced “life-changing injuries” when he set himself on fire while trying to conduct the experiment, burning his legs.

Successfully carried out, the experiment shows how a small amount of rubbing alcohol can be poured into a jam jar with a hole in the lid and lit, producing a pulsating flame that looks like a miniature jet engine.

However, officials are warning people not to try it at home due to the risk of injury.

A major risk is that burning jars may explode, sending sharp, liquid alcohol and glass fragments flying in every direction, with the potential to cause serious injury.

'Jam Jar Pulse Jet' use 'can cause significant damage, can permanently damage your vision, can permanently harm you,' firefighters warned.

“It can cause significant damage, permanently damage your vision, permanently scar you,” warned Ian Womack, division chief of St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.

“God forbid it causes injury or anything life-threatening. But the risk of fire is real,” he said. According to Fox News“We had a young teenage boy who set himself on fire while trying to complete one of these challenges, and now he will suffer life-changing injuries that he will deal with for the rest of his life.”

Setting the jar on fire “could create a fire hazard, an explosion hazard, an uncontrolled event that could set a house on fire or even set a person on fire,” Womack warned.

The fire department urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of fire and the use of pure alcohol.

“Just connect with kids and then also find opportunities to expose them to risk,” Womack advised. “The threat of burns, the threat of setting the house on fire. So that they understand that these things have real consequences.”

Independent St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and TikTok have been contacted for comment.
