Singapore Police Force (SPF) has said it does not suspect any foul play in the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, adding that the investigation is expected to be completed in the next three months.
In a statement, the SPF said it was aware of speculation and false information circulating online about the circumstances of his death, while a preliminary investigation shows no foul play.
“In accordance with the Singapore Coroners Act 2010, the matter is currently being investigated by the SPF. Based on the preliminary investigation, the SPF does not suspect any foul play,” the statement said.
Singer-filmmaker and youth icon Garg died in a swimming accident in Singapore on September 19. Garg’s death has sparked public outrage in his home state, Assam, with many protesting how Indian police are handling the case.
SPF said that a After completion of the investigation, if deemed necessary, a fact-finding process may be initiated under the leadership of a judicial officer to uncover the cause and circumstances of death.
On October 1, SPF shared a copy of the late singer’s autopsy report and preliminary investigation findings with the Indian High Commission.
However, the Indian police investigation has led to several arrests. Assam Police had earlier this month charged Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta with murder.
The police had invoked Section 103 of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS), which states that whoever commits murder shall be punished with death or life imprisonment and fine.
Others arrested include Garg’s cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg and his personal security officers (PSOs) Nandeshwar Bora and Prabin Baishya.
Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition (Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi met Garg’s bereaved family members in Guwahati, and paid tribute to them in Sonapur, where Garg was cremated.
