Professor Sujit Kumar of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College was slapped by Deepika Jha, Joint Secretary of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU). This moment was captured in CCTV camera and the video has gone viral on social media.

The Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) claimed that during an altercation on Wednesday, Jha hit Kumar, a commerce department professor who also serves as the disciplinary committee chairman of the college, inside the principal’s office.

Kumar claimed that he was forced to resign “on the spot” as tensions escalated and Jha then allegedly got up from his chair and hit him.

Speaking to ANI, Kumar told that the incident happened after the college fresher function. “The principal was going to the VC office and handing over the charge to me…During the function, some students beat up the college president-elect,” he said.

“On complaining, I tried to pacify them, but they started fighting again in my presence… A teacher named Rakesh Yadav started taking the side of students affiliated with ABVP… Police came and saved me as I was surrounded by many students.

“In the principal’s office, they pressured me to resign and I resigned. After that, a student named Deepika came and slapped me, as captured in the video clip,” she said.

Kumar said staff members were beaten and humiliated by DUSU workers and women teachers also faced the same. Later some security was provided by police officers.

According to Kumar, the aim of the conference was to look into past violent instances where students affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had allegedly attacked students affiliated with the National Students Union of India (NSUI).

He claimed that a pro-ABVP teacher broke up the debate and that ABVP members came to the event without permission.

Deepika Jha denied the claim of “forced resignation” and said that she did so after being provoked. Apart from being accused of possibly being drunk, Jha said the professor “threatened” him, used foul language and looked at him inappropriately.

Jha said, “In the principal’s office, in the presence of the police, Professor Sujit threatened me and used abusive language. I immediately asked the police to intervene and stop him, but the officials present there took no action.”

Jha also expressed regret for his impulsive behaviour. “In that moment of distress and anger, I reacted impulsively… I apologize to the entire teaching community for this incident,” she said.

In his statement to ANI, the DUSU joint secretary said that he had “no intention of disrespecting teachers.”
