New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann on Friday expressed hope that the next proposed meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will be “more fruitful” than the last one in Alaska. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, the diplomat said Germany views the situation in Ukraine with great concern and feels a desire to end the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
“I think we in Germany, and I think this is valid for all of Europe, look at what is happening in Ukraine with great concern and concern. You know, you talk about fatigue and exhaustion. I think we had a warning, two-three weeks ago when suddenly Russian fighter jets entered NATO territory for 15 minutes or something. Then we had Scandinavian air There were drones at the bases, suddenly, it is not clear whether they were Russian or not, but there is a possibility. So, I think Europe is feeling more and more under threat,” Ackermann said.
“So, I think we don’t feel exhausted or exhausted. We feel the desire and the urgency to end this war. And you mentioned a possible meeting between President Putin and President Trump. I hope it will be more fruitful than the last meeting. But at the same time, I think it’s very important to see that the American side has now at least indicated a willingness to negotiate with the Ukrainian side and that will help Russia, I think, A little nervous and maybe it’s also a sign of strength. You say, you know, we don’t accept everything, we want to be cooperative. You know, Pete Hegseth said recently at the NATO Defense Council, we are not going to sit idle, we will do something and so, I think you have to have a mix of strength, decisiveness, but also a readiness to negotiate. Unlike the Middle East, I don’t see the hostilities ending, in the Middle East This is the situation. I hope this is not a peace process yet. It will be the one, but it is not the one yet. “I hope, we will see it soon in Russia and Ukraine.”
The German ambassador noted that Ukraine is helping Germany when it comes to dealing with drone attacks.
“Let me tell you one thing, basically, the Ukrainians are helping us now because they are very good when it comes to drones and drone strikes and fighting drones and fighting drones. Their technology is really advanced. Ours is not, so we will learn from them. But you are right that suddenly we see Russian wars. I mean, if it is Russian, I think we have to be very careful so far. It has not been proven, But I think there is at least the possibility that he has crossed the lines, NATO territory, and this is an act of provocation. We have to respond and I think what you are seeing across Europe, including Britain, of course, we have to put our armed forces in a position to fight this aggression to stop it and so, you will hear that my country’s defense spending is increasing significantly to put our military in a better position.
