lando norris Will have to face “consequences” later mclaren He was held responsible for the first-lap collision. oscar piastri In Singapore,

As Norris overtook Piastri for third, the title hero banging the wheels hard at the second turn, the Australian complained bitterly over the team radio.

During the race, mclaren chose not to intervene and FIA No fault was found in Norris’s actions, but two weeks later, the team decided that the British driver was to blame and that action would be taken against him.

Both drivers and the team declined to specify what that action would be, but it is understood there will be sporting consequences as the title battle takes another notable turn.

“Lando has taken responsibility for this,” Piastri said. “I think it’s very clear to us as a team that how the lap unfolds does not mean how we want to go racing.

“I don’t think you can really say what would have been appropriate to do in the race, but ultimately the responsibility has been put on Lando.

“I will say that I’m not expecting it to be resolved any time or every time on the track, but ultimately we know how we are expected to go racing and if we don’t, there will be consequences.”

Norris accepted the team’s decision to blame him for the incident. He also suggested that the unspecified consequences they faced would be worth noting.

“The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair,” Norris said. “Then we progressed from there and understood what the consequences would be for me.

“There was contact between the two McLaren cars. Jack (Brown, CEO) and Andrea (Stella, team principal) don’t want that to happen. And I think as teammates, we don’t want that to happen.

“Of course, that’s why I was held accountable. There will be consequences.”

“It has and will have consequences for me until the end of the season,” he told Sky Sports.

Piastri was asked to step aside for Norris at Monza in September when his team-mate allowed him to pit first before a slow stop. McLaren had also stepped in the previous season, with Norris asking Piastri to let him go on to win the Hungarian Grand Prix after a pit stop.

This appears to be McLaren’s latest intervention in the title scrap as they attempt to keep things even between their drivers.

Piastri leads Norris by 22 points with six rounds remaining before this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, but the Australian has trailed his rival in each of the last three races.

Norris refuted suggestions that McLaren are making the battle between its drivers more complicated and is convinced this approach is best for the team.

“I think if I was on the outside, I would probably have a similar opinion and perspective on things like this. But internally, it’s very simple,” Norris said.

“I think sometimes the results are not positive. But at the same time, it’s clear that Andrea is interested in maintaining the positive teamwork that we have.

“Teamwork has allowed us to go from last place on the grid to the best performing team a few years ago and plus we have only two drivers who challenge each other more than any other team on the grid.”
