US President Donald Trump jumped into the controversy late Thursday as he threatened that if Hamas continued “killing people in Gaza” it would “have no choice but to go and kill”.

Tensions have risen less than a week after the ceasefire came into force on Friday, which has been marked by allegations of violations by both sides. The agreement initially saw a spike in aid deliveries until Wednesday, when Israel said it would reduce the amount of daily aid from 600 trucks to 300 in response to Hamas’s failure to release the remaining hostages.

On Thursday, Israel said it was preparing to reopen Gaza’s Rafah crossing with Egypt to let Palestinians in and out, but said aid deliveries would not be allowed for now. Israel has not set a date for opening the crossing.

The Israeli military has not responded to Hamas’ statement, but in recent days it has accused Palestinians of ignoring warnings not to approach Israeli positions, prompting troops to open fire to “eliminate the threat.”

Two people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunis on Thursday, local health officials said. Israel said its forces fired on several people who were coming out of the tunnel and approaching the troops, posing an “immediate threat”.

Under the terms of the US-backed agreement, Hamas has released all 20 surviving hostages and detainees and nine of the 28 bodies.

Hamas says reaching the remaining 19 will be difficult. As Israel’s military campaign has reduced Gaza to rubble, locating the remaining hostages will require the entry of heavy machinery and excavation equipment into the Israeli-blockade.

The Israeli government and the families of the hostages have said that not returning all the bodies is a violation of the terms of the ceasefire.

“The agreement cannot be implemented without Hamas returning all hostages,” the Hostage Families Forum headquarters said in a statement. “Any decision that weakens the pressure on Hamas or allows the agreement to continue if the hostages are not returned would be a serious moral and leadership failure.”

This marks a major change in stance for the hostage families, who had campaigned vigorously for a ceasefire agreement while the hostages were still alive in Gaza.

Israeli government spokesman Shosh Bedrosian told reporters on Thursday that Israel remains committed to the agreement and upholds its obligations, calling on Hamas to return the bodies of 19 dead hostages it had not handed over.

Later on Thursday, the Gaza Health Ministry said Israel had released 30 bodies of Palestinians killed during the clashes, bringing the total number of bodies recovered since Monday to 120.

Israel’s military aid agency Kogat said coordination is underway with Egypt to determine a date for reopening the Rafah crossing for the movement of people after completing the necessary preparations.

Kogat said the Rafah crossing would not open to aid because this was not stipulated by the ceasefire agreement at any stage. All humanitarian goods bound for Gaza will pass through Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom after passing security inspections.
