george russell has revealed a clever trick his father used to get him into karting as a kid.

Russell enjoyed a productive junior career, winning GP3 and F2 before his F1 debut in 2019, and has revealed in a first-person excerpt for Players’ Tribune How his father, Steve, would always click his stopwatch late to make his son feel like he needed to drive fast.
“I would drive as fast as I could, I think it was the fear that was pushing me,” Russell said. “I wasn’t afraid of the karts, or the speed, or the track. No. I was afraid of that stopwatch. That stopwatch was like my mortal enemy.
“I will see my father and know. I will know. ‘What did I do?’ ‘No. Not competitive. Do it again.’
“But then something strange would happen… I would go and win the race. I was more confused than anything. On Thursday with my dad, I thought I was mediocre. By Saturday, I had a trophy.
“There was a three-year period where I won almost everything I could. The next day with my dad. Click. ‘No. Do it again.’
“It took me probably six years to understand what was happening. Then it finally dawned on me: My dad was intentionally clicking the stopwatch late. He was adding seconds to my time.
“He wanted me to always think I was a little slower than him. Even when I was winning everything, I could always push myself. Always a little further.”
Russell, who has five F1 wins, is fourth in the drivers’ championship this year with six races left in the season. The next round is this weekend in Austin, Texas.
