The idols of Ganesha and Lakshmi made from Ganga soil of Varanasi are in great demand.

Varanasi, October 16 (IANS) There is a huge demand for idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi ahead of Diwali in the holy city of Varanasi. What makes these idols special is that they are made from the sacred soil of the Ganga, which adds to their sanctity and religious significance.

This year, ‘stick sculptures’ are particularly popular, attracting customers with their unique craftsmanship and decorative appeal. The fame of these traditional and beautifully made sculptures extends beyond Uttar Pradesh.

Sculptors are receiving huge orders from Delhi, Maharashtra and many other states, which clearly shows the nationwide demand.

“There is a huge demand for these idols. They are made from soil taken from the Ganga. We are also supplying them to Delhi, Mumbai and many other places,” wholesaler Ramchandra told IANS.

To meet this growing demand, artisans in Varanasi are working tirelessly, with many starting preparations months in advance. They bring pure clay from the Ganga and follow a meticulous process of preparing, moulding, baking and finally decorating the idols with vibrant colors and threads. Every step reflects the dedication and skill of the artisans.

“The idols made from the sacred soil of Ganga are in great demand,” said Jimmy Prajapati, a local shopkeeper.

This unique artistry along with the blessings associated with the soil of Ganga is making Diwali of Banaras even more meaningful. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the artisans, these idols are reaching homes across the country as symbols of prosperity and happiness.

Lakshmi Puja is central to Diwali, as it symbolizes the invocation of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Families celebrate by cleaning and decorating their homes, lighting lamps, and praying, in hopes of inviting financial stability and happiness for the coming year.

Beyond material blessings, this ritual also symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, representing spiritual regeneration and renewal.

This year, the festival of lights, Diwali, will be celebrated on 20th October.
