After Wednesday night’s incident in Nandalapura area of Indore, people who had allegedly consumed phenyl were admitted to the government-run Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH) here and according to doctors, they were said to be out of danger.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotia told PTI that amid the chaos in the MYH campus late on Wednesday night, a transgender tried to set herself on fire by sprinkling petrol on herself, but the police personnel present at the spot foiled the attempt.
Sapna Guru alias Sapna Haji, leader of a local group of transgender persons, was detained on the basis of a case registered at Pandharinath police station, he said.
Members of the second transgender group alleged that Sapna Guru and three of her associates refused to return the security deposit collected for a conference of the community and assaulted them and threatened to kill them, Dandotiya said.
They also alleged that 24 of their members, fed up with the harassment by Sapna Guru and his associates, drank phenyl on Wednesday night to commit suicide, the officer said.
He said, “All 24 people who claimed to have consumed phenyl have been admitted to Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital. According to doctors, the condition of all the patients is completely out of danger.”
Dandotiya said that the case registered by the police regarding factional dispute within the transgender community is being thoroughly investigated and other accused are being searched.
Another police officer said there was a long-running dispute between two factions of the transgender community in the city over supremacy, leadership and financial transactions.
He said that both the groups often make serious allegations against each other and demand action.
