Imphal, Oct 16 (IANS) Security forces in Manipur have arrested six terrorists of various banned organizations and seized drugs worth Rs 7.26 crore, and also arrested six drug smugglers in separate operations during the last 24 hours. Officials gave this information on Thursday.
A senior police officer said six terrorists belonging to the Kangleypak Communist Party (KCP), United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleypak (PREPAK) were arrested from Imphal West and Imphal East districts.
He said the hard-core militants were involved in various crimes, including intimidation, extortion and extortion of donations from people, government employees, contractors and others.
Some weapons, incriminating documents, a car and several mobile phones were recovered from the arrested guerrillas.
Additionally, Assam Rifles, in coordination with Manipur Police, apprehended six drug smugglers and recovered 270 soap boxes containing brown sugar, weighing 3.636 kg, worth approximately Rs 7.26 crore, in Senapati and Kangpokpi districts of Manipur.
The officer said that a car, an auto-rickshaw and several mobile phones have also been recovered from the arrested drug smugglers.
He said security forces are continuing search operations and area dominance in the border and sensitive areas of the districts.
Movement of more than 130 vehicles carrying essential commodities has been ensured without any incident on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37) during the last 24 hours. Strict security measures are taken at all sensitive locations, and security convoys are provided in sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles.
According to the official, a total of 115 nakas/checkpoints were set up in various districts in both the hill and valley areas to prevent untoward and illegal activities of anti-social elements and suspicious vehicles.
Meanwhile, Manipur Police is organizing several events, including a 16 km open and 5 km recreational run for male and female categories at Imphal on October 18 as a part of the celebrations of the 134th Raising Day of Manipur Police falling on October 19.
