Indore, Oct 16 (IANS) In a disturbing incident that shook Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city, 24 transgender persons from Nandlalpura area attempted mass suicide by consuming poisonous household cleaning agent phenyl.
The incident happened on Wednesday night. The police have arrested Sapna, the leader of the transgender community, and have started searching for Raja Hashmi, who has fled from the scene. Besides, the names of two scribes have also come to light in the entire incident.
The desperate act, stemming from deep disputes within the community and allegations of sexual assault, has thrust Indore’s transgender population into the national spotlight, highlighting their vulnerability and cry for justice.
According to Roshan Rai, a senior police officer and additional district magistrate, all 24 persons were taken to Maharaja Yashwantrao (MY) Hospital, where medical teams are working to stabilize them.
According to Chief Medical Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Hasani, the condition of the victims has improved to a great extent, with 22 now out of danger. However, they have been admitted to different wards of the hospital as per their condition; The condition of two remains critical and are under intensive observation in the ICU.
Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, dean of the hospital, said, “He drank a large amount of phenyl, which initially made his condition critical.”
“Our staff is providing round-the-clock care and we are hopeful that most people will make a full recovery,” he said.
The incident occurred amid growing tension between two factions within the local transgender community, which was reportedly triggered by a heated argument.
Police investigation revealed that the conflict turned into a dark nightmare. Police officials said that Indore Police has detained community leader Sapna for questioning in connection with the suicide attempt.
The names of two journalists have also come to light in the entire episode. However, the police have not confirmed yet.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajesh Singh said, “We are thoroughly investigating all the claims, including forensic evidence and statements of witnesses after the victims were able to speak.”
As two critical patients fight for their lives, Indore stands at a crossroads. Will this suicide attempt catalyze real change, or turn into another forgotten headline? The transgender community is still injured and waiting for answers.
