New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) The Operation Cell of South West District of Delhi Police has detected and detained two illegal African immigrants, who were living in India without valid documents for more than a decade. Officials gave this information on Thursday.
The accounts have been identified as Emmanuel Kido OBUH (35) and Harrison Umunna (43), both residents of Akumazi Umuocha, Delta State, Nigeria.
According to the police, after all necessary formalities were completed, a fresh deportation process has been initiated against the duo with the assistance of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Delhi.
Officials said that to curb crime and identify foreigners living illegally in the district, operation cell teams have been directed to collect intelligence and take strict action against such persons.
A special team led by Inspector Gajendra Singh, in-charge of Anti-Narcotics Cell, and under the supervision of ACP (Operations) Vijaypal Tomar was tasked with identifying and verifying illegal immigrants, especially in vulnerable areas.
While investigating a case under the NDPS Act, the team received information about some illegal African nationals roaming in Kishangarh area near Mehrauli.
Acting promptly, the police contacted the suspects and asked for their identity documents. Officials said the two claimed to be Nigerian nationals who had come to India on tourist and business visas, but said they had lost their passports and visas.
Subsequent verification with the Nigerian High Commission and immigration officials revealed that the two had entered India in 2010 but never returned and were living without valid visa documents. According to the police, during the search of his mobile phone, the police also found digital copies of his passport and Nigerian National ID card.
The accused reportedly told police that they were working in housekeeping jobs with other African nationals in Delhi, Gurugram (Haryana) and Noida (Uttar Pradesh), and were looking for employment at the time of their detention.
After completion of verification and legal procedures, the police initiated deportation proceedings through FRRO, New Delhi.
