According to a report by IBC24, more than a thousand sanitation workers employed under Ramkey Group, a private company contracted by Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) for door-to-door garbage collection, have stopped work and gathered in droves in Seoni to protest.
The primary demand focuses on wage hike, among other issues listed in the five-point charter.
As a result, garbage collection in residential areas has stopped, and heaps of garbage are visible in many parts of the city.
The strike spread to many depots
In a related development, according to Daily Chhattisgarh, the strike has now spread to two more depots of the company, causing further disruption.
Employees at Gokul Nagar and Dal Dal Seoni depot have locked out the facilities, accusing supervisors of misbehavior and not fulfilling promises made after earlier protests.
Earlier, workers at Mahavir Nagar had also reportedly launched a strike claiming that they had not received salaries for the last two months.
They protested by throwing garbage and cleaning equipment on the road near the local Sai temple.
Raipur Municipal Corporation is yet to respond to the protesters’ demands, while sanitation workers have said that the strike will continue until their concerns are addressed.
