Weather Update: Orange alert of heavy rain in Kerala, Mahe; Conditions are favorable for further withdrawal of monsoon

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Thursday, October 16. The weather office has also predicted heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

In its latest bulletin, the IMD has also predicted squally weather with wind speed reaching 35 kmph to 45 kmph and gusting to 55 kmph over Kerala coasts and adjoining sea areas, Lakshadweep, Maldives, Cape Comorin areas and Gulf of Mannar.

Further withdrawal of southwest monsoon

This year, the south-west monsoon is expected to end and the north-east monsoon will begin at the same time. According to the bulletin issued today, conditions are favorable for the complete departure of southwest monsoon. Along with this, northeast monsoon rainfall activity is expected to commence over the south-east peninsular region during the same period.

“Conditions are favorable for withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from remaining parts of the country during next 24 hours. Along with establishment of easterly and northeasterly winds over southern Peninsular India and south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity is likely to commence over Southeast Peninsular region during the same period,” the IMD said.

Light to moderate rain in Mumbai

According to IMD, light to moderate rain with possible thunderstorm is expected in Mumbai on October 16. The weather agency officially announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai on October 10, 2025, its earliest withdrawal since 2018.

According to IMD, the sky will be clear in Delhi this week. For the next few days, light morning mist or mist is expected to persist, with temperatures ranging between 16°C and 33°C. The maximum temperature in the national capital is expected to be between 31-33 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be between 16-18 degrees Celsius. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s AQI stood at 236 in the ‘poor’ category at 10:00 am on Thursday.

Based on India Meteorological Department forecast, south peninsular India will experience widespread rain and thunderstorm between October 16 and 21. Specifically, very heavy rainfall is predicted for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe on 16 and 17 October, with these areas also seeing isolated heavy rainfall on other days during this period.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema will also see heavy rain on October 16 and 17, while coastal and south interior Karnataka should expect it on October 16. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are likely over the entire region in the next five days.
