Maharashtra’s festive week is facing the brunt of the weather
There is a possibility of intermittent rain, cloudy sky and strong winds in districts including Pune, Satara, Ahmednagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed and Sindhudurg from October 16 to 22. IMD has issued a yellow alert for these areas, warning of light to moderate rain and storm.
This weather pattern coincides with the key days of Diwali—Vasubaras (October 17), Dhantrayodashi (October 18) and Naraka Chaturdashi (October 20), raising concerns about disruption to outdoor worship, shopping and travel plans. Similar situations were seen during Navratri earlier this month, which further increased the apprehension.
Advice for farmers and citizens
Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid open spaces during lightning activity. Farmers in western Maharashtra have been advised to delay harvesting of crops like soybean and cotton to prevent losses due to unexpected rains.
Rain will continue in South India till Diwali
The latest IMD bulletin predicts continuous rain over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till October 18. Rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is expected especially over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Lakshadweep.

Similar conditions will be seen in Konkan, Goa and Central Maharashtra from 16 to 17 October.
Northwest India offers a bright spot
In contrast, northwest India states including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are expected to enjoy dry and pleasant weather. Delhi will have clear skies and mild temperatures, which is ideal for Diwali celebrations.
Monsoon returns behind rain
Although the southwest monsoon has officially withdrawn from Maharashtra, Goa and Madhya Pradesh, prolonged moisture and atmospheric instability are fueling these late rains. IMD expects the monsoon to completely withdraw from India by October 18.
Diwali celebration amidst uncertainty of weather
Since Diwali is one of India’s most loved festivals, involving family celebrations, fireworks and outdoor events, the forecast has prompted many people to rethink their plans. Although the festive spirit remains unchanged, citizens are advised to stay informed and adapt to the festivities to ensure safety and happiness.
