Rain in Tamil Nadu: Schools closed in many districts, IMD issues alert of heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the onset of north-east monsoon over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over many districts in the next few days.

Heavy rains continue to lash parts of southern Tamil Nadu, with local authorities declaring school holidays in several districts.

According to News18, Tirunelveli District Collector Sukumar said that all schools will remain closed on October 16 due to continuous rain since midnight.

Heavy rains have also affected paddy cultivation in the district.

District collectors of Thoothukudi and Tenkasi have also announced closure of schools in their respective districts following incessant rains.

Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in parts of Tirunelveli, with the Nambiar River reportedly swollen due to water coming from the Western Ghats.

Orange alert issued regarding heavy rain

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, monsoon activity is “active” across Tamil Nadu and most places have been receiving continuous rain for the past few days.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram districts, and warned residents to remain alert.

According to the weather bulletin issued by IMD, heavy rains are also expected in Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudnagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Erode.

Apart from this, other districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Kanchipuram are likely to receive heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph.

Overall monsoon and weather conditions

According to IMD, conditions are favorable for complete withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of the country within the next few days.

Along with this, easterly and northerly winds have signaled the onset of Northeast Monsoon over southern Peninsular India.

The rainfall activity is expected to intensify in the coming days due to a cyclonic circulation over coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining Comorin area as well as another system over the south-east Arabian Sea.
