Dawson, a manufacturing engineer for electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive, said he has been growing pumpkins on a large scale for five years. The precise skills he acquired during his work helped him in proper water and sunlight To help his gourd grow, he said.

“We love spending time outside and watching things grow,” Dawson said of her 2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.
“My 4-year-old can now really pay attention to the growing process,” she adds, “especially since giant pumpkins can grow 50 to 70 pounds (23 to 32 kilograms) a day.”
Dawson’s pumpkin was runner-up in a competition in Half Moon Bay last year, when the gourd, grown by Minnesota gardening teacher Travis Geinger, weighed 2,471 pounds (1,121 kg).
Gienger of Anoka, Minnesota, set the world record for heaviest pumpkin at a California competition in 2023, when his giant jack-o’-lantern gourd weighed in at 2,749 pounds (1,247 kg). Geinger’s pumpkin was damaged earlier this season and he could not compete in this year’s competition in California.
Earlier this month, two brothers in England broke Geisinger’s record with a gourd weighing 2,819 pounds (1,278 kilograms).
