Agartala, October 15 (IANS) Three unidentified Bangladeshi cattle thieves were killed while two Indian villagers were injured in a clash between two parties at a border village in Tripura’s Khowai district on Wednesday.
A senior police officer said the two Indian villagers from Bidyabil area under Champahover police station in Khowai district had gone to work in a rubber garden near the India-Bangladesh border.
The two spotted three Bangladeshi men hiding in a rubber garden and when they were challenged, the cattle thieves became aggressive and attacked them with daos (sharp edged weapons), injuring both of them.
Both the injured Indians returned to the village and informed others. After this, some villagers reached the border area and after the clash, detained three Bangladeshis and allegedly killed them.
Two injured villagers of Bidayabil are currently undergoing treatment at Bahelbari Government Hospital.
A police team along with forensic experts reached the spot and recovered the three bodies, which were later sent to Khowai District Hospital for post-mortem. The situation is said to be under control. Senior officials also visited the spot and investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Border Security Force (BSF) troops, in a joint operation with Tripura Police, conducted a raid in Karamtila border area of South Tripura district on Tuesday and recovered a consignment of clothes worth Rs 8 lakh, a BSF spokesperson said.
He said that in separate operations, alert BSF troops foiled several smuggling attempts along the India-Bangladesh border, rescued cattle and seized contraband worth Rs 5 lakh, which was intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh.
Tripura, which shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh, is surrounded by the neighboring country on three sides, making the northeastern state highly vulnerable to cross-border illegal activities.
Except for a few stretches, most of the border is fenced to prevent smuggling, cross-border crimes and illegal infiltration.
