Malaysian police have blamed social media after a 14-year-old boy stabbed a 16-year-old schoolboy to death, sparking national outrage and calls for tighter online controls.
The incident happened at a secondary school in nearby Selangor on Tuesday kuala lumpurWhere both the students studied. Police responded to an emergency call at 9.40 am when a teacher heard her screams and found the victim near the toilet with multiple knife wounds.
The suspect was taken into custody within 30 minutes of the incident and is being held at the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters until 21 October.
Police have seized two sharp objects used from the spot.
“It is believed that emotional impulses and the influence of social media have been identified as factors that led the suspect to behave this way,” Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Police said that the authorities are yet to know the motive behind the incident.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim responded by calling for stronger regulation of online platforms, citing an increase in violent incidents against girls in schools in recent months.
“Of course, the responsibility lies with parents and schools, but almost all of these issues arise from uncontrolled use of mobile phones and social media,” Mr Ibrahim said after attending the Finance Ministry’s monthly meeting in Putrajaya on Wednesday.
He said his ministers will discuss strict measures on the use of social media in the next cabinet meeting.
Video of the incident reportedly shows the teenage boy walking down the school corridor wearing a blood-stained school uniform and a knife in his hand.
It is believed that there was no conversation between the two before the incident.
Police have confirmed the discovery of a handwritten note, believed to have been left by the teenage suspect. The suspect’s father, a 40-year-old man who did not want to be named, said he was “heartbroken” and unable to understand his son’s actions.
According to China Press, he said, “I am very sad that my son did this. I know that no matter what I say, it is useless. No matter what I do, I can’t bring his daughter back. I don’t know how to face him.”
She described her son as introverted and quiet and said there was nothing unusual about him on the morning of the attack.
“I sent him to school as usual. I didn’t expect this to happen,” he said.
