Kolkata, Oct 15 (IANS) Amid the controversy over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments on women’s safety following the recent gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a satirical campaign targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership.
Launching a scathing attack, the BJP claimed that closing Trinamool Congress offices by 8 pm and confining their leaders at home overnight could help in reducing rape cases in West Bengal.
Taking a jibe at Ax, the party claimed that if Mamata Banerjee closes Trinamool Congress offices and confines party leaders to their homes after 8 pm, rape cases in West Bengal will reduce by 90 per cent.
Adding to the statement, BJP IT cell chief and West Bengal in-charge Amit Malviya said, “This post summarizes everything that is wrong with Mamata Banerjee. She must go!”
Hitting back, TMC said BJP should deal with rape incidents in its own states before preaching to Trinamool leaders.
The BJP campaign directly accuses TMC leaders of being directly or indirectly involved in crimes against women in the state.
The post also took aim at Mamata Banerjee’s comment that women should not go out at night – a comment she made while speaking about the Durgapur gangrape case.
The campaign goes a step further, mocking the Chief Minister’s false claim that the victim, a Dalit second-year medical student, had left her college campus at 12.30 pm, although the institute later confirmed that she had left at 8 pm.
BJP spokesperson Shatorupa told IANS that the links between TMC leaders and criminals were evident in previous cases, citing the rape of a minor girl in Hanskhali, RG Kar rape and murder of a junior doctor and the Kasba Law College rape incident.
“Relatives and close associates of TMC leaders have been involved in many crimes against women,” he alleged.
Echoing this sentiment, senior BJP leader and former national secretary Rahul Sinha told IANS that TMC leaders have “established a reign of terror on women.”
“There is only one way to change this – removing the TMC government from power. Unless the government changes, the situation will remain the same,” he said.
West Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari had also recently claimed that the father of one of the accused arrested in the Durgapur case is a TMC cadre.
Criticizing Mamata Banerjee’s comment on women going out at night, the BJP leader said that the CM’s comment reflects the serious situation of women’s safety in West Bengal.
He said, “The situation is so pathetic that even Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is asking women not to go out at night. We believe that until TMC is thrown out of Bengal, women will remain unsafe on the streets.”
Responding to BJP’s allegations, TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty asked BJP leaders to pay attention to the rising incidents of rape in BJP-ruled states before commenting on West Bengal.
He said, “In Odisha, women are being raped on the beaches. Many such incidents are being reported there and from other BJP-ruled states. Why don’t they talk about it? Similar cases have happened in Hathras, Unnao and other places. Should BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh be asked to stay at home? The BJP is clearly politicizing the Durgapur gangrape case. The police have already arrested all the five accused immediately.”
