Chennai, Oct 14 (IANS) After much delay, the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) is all set to inaugurate its flagship housing project with 1,152 flats spread over 16 blocks at Poochchi Aathipedu village in Uthukottai taluk of Tiruvallur district by December.
Built for Rs 156 crore, the four-storey project aims to provide affordable houses to families from economically weaker sections in both Tiruvallur and Chennai districts.
The project, launched in 2019 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) – Housing for All scheme, was originally scheduled to be completed within 18 months. However, work came to a halt for almost two years due to the pandemic. The construction timeline was later extended three times – from December 2022 to June 2023 and again to June 2025 – before completion this year.
Aimed at improving urban housing conditions, the scheme focuses on providing safe and affordable housing to slum dwellers and low-income families.
Tiruvallur TNUHDB executive engineer said each flat costs Rs 13.55 lakh, of which Rs 6.5 lakh is contributed by the state government and Rs 1.5 lakh by the Central government. Beneficiaries with annual income less than Rs 3 lakh are eligible under this scheme and are required to pay Rs 6.5 lakh.
Almost 90 per cent of the construction has been completed, only finishing works like painting and installation of sewage treatment plant are left.
After the extension given to the contractor, the project is expected to be ready for possession by December.
Apart from residential blocks, the housing complex is being developed with essential civic amenities, including a community hall, a primary school, a primary health center (PHC), two nursery schools and three ration shops.
Applications for the flats were accepted through TNUHDB portal and Chief Minister Special Cell. Once inaugurated, the project will prove to be a major milestone in the ongoing efforts of the State Government to provide affordable housing and improve the quality of life for the economically weaker sections in the Chennai-Thiruvallur region.
