Chandigarh, October 13 (IANS) Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, along with Ravneet Singh Bittu, paid tribute to late Haryana Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Y. Met Puran Kumar’s family and Athawale said he told the family that we are with them… action should be taken against both (DGP and former SP).
Athawale said that anti-Dalit mentality continues in the country. “I met the victim’s family who alleged that Kumar was harassed by his superior. They said someone else did the wrong and the blame was put on Kumar.”
He said that the Dalit community across the country is angry due to the death of the IPS officer. Athawale said, “Even after 75 years of independence, the Constitution prepared by Bhimrao Ambedkar is being insulted.”
He said that he has sought an appointment with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and will talk to him about this.
“I met Y. Puran Kumar’s brothers – one lives in Hyderabad and the other in Mumbai. I also met Amneet P. Kumar and his father. Y. Puran Kumar comes from the Dalit community. The family is claiming that Y. Puran Kumar faced casteist comments and insults for a long time. Other people used to make mistakes, and he was being accused of those mistakes. After a lot of struggle, he joined the IPS cadre. There was so much pressure that he was forced to take this step,” he told the media after coming out of Kumar’s official residence in Sector 24.
“I have told the family that we are with them. There are allegations against the DGP (Shatrujit Singh Kapoor) and former SP (Rohtak)… action should be taken against both of them,” Athawale said.
Bittu also met Kumar’s family. After the meeting, he said, “Haryana Chief Minister Naib Saini discussed the matter with him.” CM has said that Haryana government will take a big decision on the matter.
In a rapidly changing political development, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday evening met late Haryana IGP officer Y. Will express condolences at Puran Kumar’s residence.
Seven days after the ‘suicide’ of the IPS officer, the body is still in the mortuary.
Rahul Gandhi will arrive on October 14 at 5.15 pm and will meet Amneet P. Kumar, widow of the late IPS officer.
The family had refused permission for postmortem examination or cremation until the arrest of Haryana DGP Shatrujit Kapoor, ousted Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia and other officials named in Kumar’s “last note”.
Inspector General Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself with his service revolver at his Chandigarh residence on October 7 and left a “last note”.
Even seven days after the suicide, the last rites of the police officer have not been performed.
The standoff continues between Puran Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar and the Haryana government over the arrest of DGP Shatrujit Singh Kapoor and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia.
The victim’s wife, senior Haryana cadre bureaucrat Amneet P. Kumar, has sought justice for her husband in a letter to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who also visited her residence to express his grief.
The letter, which was declared urgent and confidential three days ago, expressed grief over what she called a “gross injustice” and “complete administrative inaction” more than 48 hours after her husband’s death. In a nine-page “suicide note”, Puran Kumar allegedly accused nine serving IPS officers of Haryana Police, one retired IPS officer and three retired IAS officers of “caste-based discrimination”.
The serving officers included DGP Kapoor and Superintendent of Police Bijarnia. Describing the death as extremely heartbreaking, state opposition leader Bhupendra Hooda said in Rohtak, “Our only demand is that the culprits be punished. It is the responsibility of the government to provide justice. The government should not shy away from its responsibility.”
