German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed hope that Donald Trump will have the same impact on the war in Ukraine as he has in the Middle East, where he helped end the war in Gaza.

Speaking in Sharm el-Sheikh ahead of a summit with Trump and other global leaders to strengthen the Gaza ceasefire, Meraz said the meeting in Egypt showed that an end to the war is possible if the international community stands together.

His comments echo those made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who previously said: “When peace is achieved in one part of the world, it brings greater hope for peace in other areas where life is still in danger.”
