Bhopal, Oct 12 (IANS) A video of a youth washing the feet of another man and publicly apologizing in Sataria village under the jurisdiction of Patera police station in Damoh district has gone viral, sparking widespread debate and prompt police action.
After this incident which took place on Saturday night, Damoh district police registered an FIR against six people.
The video, which quickly circulated on social media, shows a local youth, Purushottam Kushwaha, washing the feet of another man and apologizing.
According to police sources, the act was allegedly in response to an old video made by Purushottam, in which he had filmed a youth named Annu allegedly drinking and selling liquor in the village, despite the liquor ban imposed by the community.
That earlier video, which showed Annu wearing a garland of shoes, sparked outrage and demands for a public apology.
Under pressure from community members, Purushottam removed the video from Instagram and was asked to perform the foot washing ritual and pay a fine of Rs 5,100.
The viral spread of the apology video gained further attention when a social media influencer shared it as news, further escalating the controversy. In response, the police initiated preventive measures to maintain peace in Sataria.
Regular patrols have been deployed, and senior officials as well as respected local citizens have been tasked with engaging residents to de-escalate tensions.

Although the police have not disclosed the names of those named in the FIR, they have confirmed that a case has been registered against two unidentified people along with the four identified in the video.
Kushwaha community has submitted a memorandum demanding immediate arrest and imposition of relevant sections under the IT Act.
Police officials also said they are investigating whether AI or other digital tools were used to defame any person. Investigation is ongoing.
