Kolkata, Oct 12 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after she, speaking on the gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, said girls should not be allowed to travel outside at night.

Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar has said that Chief Minister Banerjee should step down from her post after her shocking remarks against women.

“Coming from the highest level of the administration directly holding the Home Department (serving as her own Police Minister) and above all, being a woman, her (Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s) comments are completely condemnable and shameful!” Majumdar said in an ex-post.

He said, “The Chief Minister cannot escape responsibility for the complete breakdown of law and order in West Bengal. Surprisingly, even now, she has chosen to blame it on a private medical college! This is despite the fact that a few months ago, a young woman doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside a government medical college hospital.”

The former state BJP president also said, “As Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee’s announcement is not only an insult to every woman in Bengal but also a matter of grave concern. Comments of this nature by a woman Chief Minister once again highlight that law and order has completely gone out of the government’s control. It is now Mamata Banerjee’s moral duty to step down without any delay.”

Speaking on the incident of alleged gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, Chief Minister Banerjee said that women should not be allowed to travel at night.

He also said that the Trinamool Congress-led state government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance against heinous crimes like rape and asked the police to take strict action against the accused persons.

Later, while talking to journalists, CM Banerjee said, “This is a private college. Three weeks ago, three girls were raped on a beach in Odisha. They should also take care of their students and especially girls.”

He said that women should protect themselves.

“Girls should not be allowed to go out (college) at night. They also have to protect themselves. There is a forest area. Police are searching everyone. No one will be spared. Whoever is guilty will be given strict punishment. Three people have already been arrested. We will take strict action. When this happens in other states, it is also condemnable. Such incidents have happened in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha; we too feels like That the government should do this.” Take strict action there. In our state (West Bengal), we chargesheeted people within one to two months and the trial court ordered the hanging of the accused.”

Chief Minister Banerjee’s shocking comments were widely condemned and criticized by political leaders.

Criticizing Chief Minister Banerjee’s “insensitive” comment, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said, “After the horrific incident of gang rape in Durgapur, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comment that women should not come out of their homes after the evening is not only insensitive but also extremely insulting.” An example of ‘blaming the victim’.”

The BJP leader also said, “While the women of the state are looking towards the government for safety and justice, the Chief Minister is advising them to stay indoors, which is unacceptable in a civilized society. This comment proves that the Trinamool government has no responsibility for the safety of women. It is a matter of shame that a Chief Minister with such a mindset is in charge of the state.”

Senior CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty said it is the responsibility of the state government to provide security to women outside the premises of medical colleges.

“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee practically admitted that there is no law and order in the state because her government cannot provide security to women at night. During the Left Front government, women could go out at night without any fear. But after coming to power, her (Mamata Banerjee’s) government has reversed this. There is no security for women inside and outside the medical institutions. While a female trainee doctor was raped inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, this time a similar The incident has happened. Medical College. She (Mamata Banerjee) cannot hide her failure as the chief minister of the state,” Chakraborty said.
