New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) After former Union Minister P Chidambaram termed Operation Blue Star as a “wrong” approach, the BJP launched a scathing attack on the Congress and termed the 1984 military operation a “political audacity” carried out under the direction of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Chidambaram made this comment while moderating a discussion on journalist Harinder Baweja’s book ‘They Will Shoot You Madam’ at the Khushwant Singh Sahitya Mahotsav in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh on Saturday.

During the session, the former home minister said Operation Blue Star, launched on the orders of Indira Gandhi to flush out terrorists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, was the “wrong way” and Gandhi “paid the price for that mistake with her life”.

However, he said that the operation was a “cumulative decision of the army, police, intelligence and civil service”, adding that Gandhi could not be entirely blamed for it.

The BJP reacted sharply, saying the Sikh community would ‘never forgive’ the Congress for Operation Blue Star.

The party’s national spokesperson RP Singh criticized the Congress and said the operation was “completely avoidable”, adding that a strategy like Operation Black Thunder could have achieved the same objective without the bloodshed.

In a post on Without defilement, and the objective could have been achieved without it. Tragic loss of lives of innocent devotees.”

He accused Indira Gandhi of choosing “the path of confrontation for electoral gains” by portraying the Sikh community as “anti-national” in the run-up to the 1984 parliamentary elections.

Singh said, “In doing so, she fell into her own political trap and ultimately paid the price with her life. But the real tragedy was suffered by my community – more than 3,000 Sikhs were brutally massacred in Delhi and more than 30,000 Sikhs were murdered across Punjab, victims of a deliberate political conspiracy that tore apart the social fabric of the country.” Gave.”

He said, “History must record the truth: Operation Blue Star was not a national necessity – it was a political audacity.”

Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said Chidambaram’s comments highlight the Congress party’s “historic mistake” of committing atrocities against the Sikh community.

“To say that Indira Gandhi was not responsible for this is not at all correct. She is responsible as the Prime Minister of the country. It was her conscious decision because of her hatred towards Sikhs, which led to the killing of Sikhs. The party which was responsible for this is certainly accepting that it was a mistake, but P. Chidambaram should remember that Sikhs will never forget the party and Indira Gandhi.”
