Trinamool leader threatens to launch protests in Delhi if names of ‘legitimate’ voters in Bengal are removed

Kolkata, Oct 11 (IANS) Trinamool Congress general secretary Kunal Ghosh on Saturday threatened to launch a protest with 1 lakh people in Delhi if the name of even a single valid voter is removed from the West Bengal voter list through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Addressing the Vijaya Sammilani (get-together after Durga Puja) function at Ketugram in East Burdwan district, Ghosh said, “Stay united against SIR. We have Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee on our side. The Trinamool Congress family is with you. If the name of even one valid voter is removed, we will protest outside the Election Commission office in Delhi with 1 lakh people.”

The Trinamool spokesperson attacked the BJP for advocating the need to conduct SIR of the voter list of West Bengal to remove illegal voters.

Ghosh said, “Earlier, they had said that central forces should be deployed to conduct elections. Despite this they lost (West Bengal Assembly elections). Now, they want to tamper with the voter list. They have used the Election Commission for this. They have included names of voters from other states in the list. Just as they won in Maharashtra and Delhi, they want to do the same here. But Mamata Banerjee has understood their trick.”

He also expressed confidence that Trinamool will retain power in West Bengal by winning about 250 seats.

“After the 2026 assembly elections, Trinamool is coming back to power with 250 seats. There will be no change in the post of chief minister. There will be a change in the post of leader of the opposition because the BJP will not have the right number of MLAs for that post,” Ghosh said.

Amid indications that the Special In-depth Review (SIR) of the Election Commission of India in West Bengal will begin after October 15, the Commission had made it clear that under no circumstances, its norms should be compromised with respect to the selection of returning officers, especially Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in the state.
