Haveri (Karnataka), October 11 (IANS) Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said the administration in the state has been paralyzed due to internal conflict within the Congress over power sharing. He said that people are suffering because there is lack of clarity in the Congress high command.
Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, he said, “Since the day the Congress government was formed, there has been a struggle over transfer of power and sharing. Nothing is stable. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s camp says he will remain for five years, while Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s camp says the Karnataka Congress president will become the chief minister.”
“It seems that the high command is unable to take a clear decision on the matter. Even within the high command, there are two groups – one supporting the Chief Minister and the other supporting Shivakumar. This is where the problem lies. Due to these internal issues, the administration of the state has come to a standstill, and the people of Karnataka are suffering. If he analyzes the situation deeply, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should answer as to what will happen next.”
The BJP leader said that looking at Siddaramaiah’s political background, it has to be seen whether he is still the rebellious type who stands up when deprived of power, or has he now become a compromise-oriented Siddaramaiah.
“The outcome depends on how strong the high command is and whether they will make changes or not,” he said.
Asked about allegations that Congress MLA KC Virendra alias Virendra Pappi was transferring money for a cabinet post in the Bihar elections, Bommai said the ED is conducting a detailed investigation.
“They are investigating where this money came from and how much money is involved. The truth will come out after the investigation.”
Responding to a question about the government’s announcement of distributing Indira kits instead of rice under the Anna Bhagya scheme, he said: “Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier said that 15 kg rice – 10 kg from the state government and 5 kg from the Center – would be given. Now, since the state government does not have funds to purchase rice, they are resorting to this option.”
Responding to a question about BJP leaders boycotting the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) meeting, the former CM said the creation of Greater Bengaluru is for political gains.
“They have reorganized some constituencies and deliberately divided them through delimitation to gain reservation benefits and political mileage in areas where the BJP is strong. This is a ploy to come to power, and will not lead to any real development.”
He further said that although it is well known that Bengaluru receives frequent rains, no precautionary measures have been taken.
Bommai said, “Main drains and sub-drains should be cleaned, and encroachments should be cleared. During our tenure, they had sanctioned Rs 8,000 crore for cleaning major and sub-drains and clearing encroachments. That work has now stopped. Because of this, water flows onto roads and into houses in low-lying areas, causing great hardship to people.”
