Patna, Oct 11 (IANS) Former MP Arun Singh on Saturday joined the Janata Dal United (JD-U), marking his return to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s political camp after years of separation.
Singh, who represents Jehanabad Lok Sabha constituency, joined JDU along with his son Rituraj Singh.
The taking over took place in the presence of Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, JDU Working President Sanjay Jha, State President Umesh Kushwaha, Water Resources Minister Vijay Chaudhary, Rural Affairs Minister Ashok Chaudhary and other senior party leaders.
Arun Singh and his son joined NDA before the seat sharing formula.
Arun Singh, a prominent leader of the Bhumihar community, was once a close aide of Nitish Kumar and had fought with him against the Lalu-Rabri regime.
However, he later defected and contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Jehanabad on the ticket of Upendra Kushwaha’s party and won the seat.
After Kushwaha’s merger with JDU, Singh parted ways and later joined Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party for some time.
Party sources indicated that Rituraj Singh is likely to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections from Ghosi constituency in Jehanabad district.
On this occasion, Lalan Singh said, “It is a very good opportunity when former MPs Chandeshwar Prasad Chandravanshi and Arun Singh have come together on one platform. With the arrival of Arun Singh, our party will be strengthened in Magadh division. This is a homecoming for him.”
It is noteworthy that both the leaders have earlier contested elections against each other in Jehanabad.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, JD-U’s Chandeshwar Prasad Chandravanshi lost to RJD’s Surendra Yadav.
JDU working president Sanjay Jha welcomed Arun Singh’s return, saying, “JDU has become stronger with his joining. Under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, the NDA will win the upcoming Bihar assembly elections and form the government once again.”
