Chennai, Oct 11 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu Teacher Recruitment Board (TRB) is likely to release a major recruitment notification within the next two weeks to fill over 2,000 assistant professor posts in government arts and science colleges across the state.

This step was taken by Higher Education Minister K. The raise comes after Govi Chezhiyan announced that the state government has approved the appointment of 2,708 permanent assistant professors to strengthen the faculty in these colleges.

This massive recruitment drive comes amid rapid expansion of higher education infrastructure – 37 new government arts and science colleges have been established in the last four years, including 16 in the current academic year alone.

A senior official of the higher education department said that the upcoming recruitment will be conducted directly through TRB.

“The notification will contain complete details of online registration, eligibility and certificate uploading. Once the applications are scrutinized, eligible candidates will be called for the competitive examination,” the official said.

According to TRB sources, the recruitment process will follow a transparent, merit-based system.

After the examination results are published, interviews will be conducted in all the districts based on the location of candidates’ choice.

“The entire process is expected to take about four to five months,” the official said.

The higher education department is struggling to fill nearly 4,000 sanctioned assistant professor vacancies from 2023 due to pending legal challenges.

As an interim measure, guest lecturers have been appointed to ensure that teaching activities are not disrupted.

The upcoming recruitment drive is expected to significantly improve the student-teacher ratio and bring stability to the faculty composition in government institutions. Once completed, this will be one of the largest faculty appointments in recent years by the Government of Tamil Nadu, which aims to enhance the quality of higher education across the state.
